AAMFT Case Study: Using iMIS to Remove Legacy Barriers

The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy partnered with BSI to prepare their organization for a smooth transition to the cloud. By leveraging the iMIS 20/20 Advanced program, AAMFT was able to take meaningful first steps toward modernizing its internal systems. This foundation focused on replacing aging customizations, improving data quality, and aligning business processes with current best practices. Problem

AAMFT had reached a point where long-standing customizations were no longer serving the organization effectively. Several of these custom-built components had become outdated, making them difficult to maintain and creating friction across day-to-day operations. At the same time, third-party applications that AAMFT depended on were continuing to update their own software, which created compatibility concerns. Combined with ongoing server issues, these challenges introduced operational risk and made it increasingly clear that a modernization effort was needed to stabilize their environment and prepare for upcoming organizational priorities.

Solutions

To address these issues, BSI conducted detailed business process reviews to understand how AAMFT staff were using iMIS and to identify where legacy customizations were creating constraints. These reviews helped uncover opportunities to remove unnecessary complexity and transition workflows back to standard iMIS features. By maximizing out-of-the-box functionality, AAMFT was able to eliminate many of the barriers created by outdated custom code. BSI also supported AAMFT in updating internal processes and cleaning up existing data. This work ensured alignment with new organizational initiatives and improved the reliability of information flowing through the system. Particular attention was given to optimizing billing processes for both courses and membership-related transactions, including enrollment and renewals. These improvements positioned AAMFT to take full advantage of their iMIS system while reducing administrative effort for staff.

Results

As a result of this work, AAMFT now operates on a more stable and up-to-date system that interacts smoothly with third-party applications and uses newer iMIS capabilities. The restructuring of core processes, guided by industry best practices, has not only resolved existing operational challenges but also established new workflows that will support the organization well into the future. The significant data cleanup effort has also created long-term value. With improved accuracy and consistency, staff can rely on the information they retrieve through reports and queries. This leads to better decision-making and increased confidence in the tools they use every day. Overall, AAMFT is now better positioned for its cloud journey with a streamlined, efficient, and future-ready iMIS environment.
